AGGIES FALL IN EXTRA INNINGS AT WIDENER

CHESTER (PA) – Delaware Valley College rallied from a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings, but Widener University's Joe Peticca had a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Pride to a 4-3, non-conference victory.

Widener (18-10) built its advantage thanks to two runs in the third and one more in the fifth. In the third, Tom DeAngelis ripped an RBI single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sean Saverio. DeAngelis then hit a solo home run in the fifth for the 3-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when the Aggies (12-19-1) notched three of their eight hits and also took advantage of one Widener error. With one out, Dan Hrubos reached base on the miscue and advanced to third on a single by Zach Chodur. After Chodur stole second, Jake Barben drilled a single to right field to plate Hrubos and advance Chodur to third. Michael Kerns then made it a one-run ballgame when his single to left scored Chodur.

It was still a 3-2 contest with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Barben stepped to the plate as Delaware Valley's last hope and the sophomore first baseman delivered with his second home run of the season, an opposite-field blast over the right field fence.

The game moved into extra innings after the Pride hit into a double play to end the bottom of the ninth. The Aggies put two runners on base with two outs in the top of the 10th but could not score. In the bottom of the stanza, Widener loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to a single, a passed ball on a strikeout and an intentional walk. Peticca, a senior, then notched his first hit of the year, a single into left field for the game-winner.

Barben finished 3-for-4 with the dramatic ninth-inning homer and two RBIs. Kellen Jarrett was 3-for-5 with a double. Brian Hafer pitched six strong innings and allowed just three earned runs. Cody Hudnall took the loss in relief.

DeAngelis was 2-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Pride. Alex Oliver also had a multiple-hit game as he went 2-for-3. Brandon McCloskey started the game on the mound and allowed just one earned run and six hits in seven innings of work. Mike Pappas picked up the win.
