DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Four-year pitchers
Sean Tappan and
Mike Isgro made the most of Senior Day as they each picked up victories in Delaware Valley College's doubleheader sweep of Freedom Conference foe Misericordia University, 9-2 and 12-4.
With the sweep, the Aggies improved to 12-18-1 overall and 4-14 in the conference. The Cougars fell to 18-16 and 5-13.
Tappan went the distance in the opener and allowed just two runs and seven hits while striking out six. The win was the 16th of his career and he moved into sole possession of sixth place in school history. Tappan also moved up to third in career strikeouts with 183.
Isgro pitched six and two-third innings in the nightcap before making way for fellow senior
Mike Cavallaro. Isgro retired 10 in a row and one point in the game and finished with four runs and five hits allowed while fanning seven. The performance moved him into 10th place on the all-time list with 13 wins and 130 strikeouts.
Isgro also moved up the all-time charts in various offensive categories as he continued his stellar season at the plate. He went 2-for-4 in the opener, including his ninth home of the run of the season that gave the Aggies the lead for good at 3-2. The round-tripper was the 16th of his career, moving him into a tie for third place in that category and it added to his school-record RBI total that he set on Friday. Isgro upped that figure to 129 as he knocked in three runs with a 2-for-3 effort in the second game. He scored two times as well to move into eighth place with 111 career runs.
Isgro's opening-game bomb completed a three-run third inning for Delaware Valley. The Aggies then two in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Otstot and a Misericordia error, and put one on the board in the fifth on an RBI double by
Zach Chodur. They then finished the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single by
Dan Hrubos and a two-run single by
Jake Barben.
Barben was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Otsot also knocked in two runs with a 1-for-2 showing. Kenny Durling and Bubba Jasinksi were each 2-for-3 with first-inning RBIs with Durling knocking in his run with a triple. Jamie Philippi pitched four innings and took the loss.
The Aggies again found themselves down 2-0 after half an inning as Durling smacked a two-run homer off Isgro. However, they sent 11 batters to the plate in the second and scored six runs off of five hits. Isgro drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run and Hrubos followed with a two-run single to put Delaware Valley ahead to stay. Chodur and Barben added back-to-back run-scoring singles and a sixth run scored on an error.
The Aggies added to the advantage with two runs in the fourth on an error and a wild pitch. After Misericordia scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth, Delaware Valley matched it with an RBI double by Barben. It then plated three runs in the sixth with senior
Dylan Saldutti providing an RBI single and later scoring on Isgro's two-run double. Scott Huddle knocked in his second run of the game for Misericordia with an RBI double in the seventh.
Barben finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Hrubos went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Chodur and
Kellen Jarrett had two hits and two runs scored apiece.
Durling was 1-for-3 with the home run and two RBIs to pace the Cougars. Patrick Clark took the loss after going just one-plus innings.
