AGGIES OPEN FREEDOM ACTION WITH TWINBILL SPLIT

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Zac Stavish led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to give Delaware Valley College the lead for good and a 5-4 victory in the nightcap as the Aggies salvaged a split of their Freedom Conference doubleheader with visiting FDU-Florham. The Devils took the opener, 9-4.

Delaware Valley moved its record to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the Freedom while FDU-Florham saw its marks go to 8- and 1-1.

The Aggies had just surrendered three runs and lost a 4-1 advantage in the top of the sixth when Stavish stepped to the plate in the bottom of the stanza. The sophomore drilled a Brandon Smith pitch over the right-center field fence for his first collegiate home run and a 5-4 lead.

FDU-Florham put the tying run on base twice in the top of the seventh but Aggie freshman Cody Hudnall got out of both situations for his second save of the season. Marc Hubbert led off the inning with a single, but Hudnall got Matt Joiner to hit into a double play. Greg Geran kept the Devils alive with a two-out walk, but Joey Santillo flied out to left to the end the game.

FDU-Florham opened the scoring in the first on an RBI single by Hubbert, but Delaware Valley matched it in the third with Mike Isgro's RBI single. The Aggies then scored three runs off of three hits and two Devil miscues in the fifth. Dylan Saldutti had an RBI double in the stanza while Kellen Jarrett added a run-scoring single. However, the Devils tied it in the sixth thanks to five hits and one costly error. Hubbert led off the inning with a home run while Dan Pregno knocked in the tying run with a two-out single. That led to Stavish's heroics and the Aggie win.

Mike Cavallaro picked up the victory in relief of Sean Tappan, who allowed just two earned run and five hits while striking out seven in five-plus innings of work. Saldutti was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hubbert was 3-for-3 with the home run and two RBI for the Devils. Smith took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs and six hits over six innings.

The opener saw FDU-Florham build a 6-1 advantage thanks to two runs in each of the first three innings. The Devils took advantage of two Aggie errors in the first innings while Steve Seminerio had an RBI double in the second and Nick Core added a run-scoring triple in the third to highlight those innings. Delaware Valley's lone run was an RBI double by Jake Barben to plate Isgro.

Isgro, who entered the twinbill with a .625 batting average and 16 RBIs in just eight games, kept his torrid start going as he smacked a three-run homer deep over the left field fence in the bottom of the third to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

However, FDU-Florham came right back in the top of the fourth and chased Isgro from the mound as it loaded the bases with just one out. Ryan Fandel then delivered a bases-clearing double for a 9-4 advantage. It was Fandel's second hit of the game as he went 2-for-4.

Jake Hazen and Joiner took care of the rest for the Devils on the mound. Hazen improved to 3-0 as he went five innings and gave up four runs (three earned) and six hits while fanning six. Joiner added two scoreless and hitless innings.

Isgro was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs at the plate. The senior did take the loss and fell to 1-1 and he allowed nine runs (six earned) and six hits over three-plus innings. Barben was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
