DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College nearly rallied from 10-0 and 11-2 deficits, but visiting Ursinus College held on for a wild, 13-11 victory in a non-conference game.
The Bears (15-8-1) started the game by loading the bases as the first two batters walked and the next was hit by a pitch. Chris Fusco then smacked a grand slam home run for a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Ben Gresh added an RBI triple.
Ursinus added to the lead in the third on a solo home run by Gresh. The Bears then put four on the board in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Tommy Clarke. Delaware Valley (13-9) notched single runs in the fourth and fifth stanzas thanks to an RBI single by
Kellen Jarrett and a solo home run by
Kevin Weingart. Ursinus answered with one in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice for an 11-2 advantage.
The Aggies made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as they scored five times to make it a four-run game. Weingart,
Zach Chodur and
Dylan Saldutti had RBI singles while Jarrett added a two-run double. Ursinus upped its advantage to 13-7 with two in the top of the eighth, but back came Delaware Valley with four in the bottom of the stanza for an 13-11 ballgame. Weingart knocked in another run with a double while
Matt Barto had an RBI on a ground out. The final two runs scored on a Bear error.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies had one on with two outs, but loaded the bases thanks to a Weingart single and an Ursinus error. However, reliever Ryan Schmidt got Barto to ground out to second to end the three-hour contest. The save was Schmidt's third of the season.
Weingart and Gresh nearly hit for the cycle for their respective teams. Weingart moved into the leadoff position for Delaware Valley and responded with a 4-for-6 afternoon as he had two singles, a double and a home run. He scored three runs and knocked in three. Gresh was 3-for-5 for the Bears with double, triple, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Jarrett was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Aggies. Chodur added two hits while
Gary Cooper and
Mike Thomas scored two runs apiece.
Brian Hafer lasted just seven batters and suffered the loss.
Fusco finished with five RBIs and a 2-for-3 showing for Ursinus. Clarke knocked in three runs on a 1-for-6 effort. Steve Christakos pitched seven innings for his first win of the year.
