DALLAS (PA) – Misericordia University notched a doubleheader sweep over visiting Delaware Valley College, 6-5 and 9-4, in Freedom Conference action from Sunday afternoon.
The losses dropped the Aggies to 13-8 overall and 1-7 in the Freedom while the Cougars upped their marks to 14-11 and 3-4. Delaware Valley will return to action on Monday for its fourth game in three days as the Aggies host Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference match-up.
The opener saw Delaware Valley scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 advantage.
Gary Cooper and
Matt Barto had RBI singles in that spurt while
Dylan Saldutti added a sacrifice fly. However, Misericordia's Andres Gonzalez smacked a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead for good for the Cougars.
Kevin Weingart drilled a two-run homer in the third inning to account for the Aggies' first two runs of the game. He finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and those two RBIs. Cooper was 2-for-3 while Barto was 2-for-4.
Mike Isgro suffered the loss despite allowing just three earned runs in seven-plus innings of work. Max Weintraub picked up the win in relief for Misericordia while Brandon Calafut was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
In the second game, Delaware Valley trailed 3-0 before a two-run homer by Barto in the top of the fourth closed the gap. The Cougars responded with two runs in their half of the stanza, but back came the Aggies with two in the fifth on a
Zach Chodur two-run blast.
However, Misericordia put the contest away with a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth. The big blow for the Cougars was a two-out, two-run single by Jamie Philippi to make it a 9-4 game. Philippi was 1-for-4 with four RBIs.
The home runs by Barto and Chodur were their lone hits of the game. Saldutti was the lone Aggie to have a multiple-hit contest as he went 2-for-5.
Rob Galdieri started, went six-plus innings and suffered the loss.
