DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley College offense came alive to the tune of 25 runs and 29 hits as the Aggies swept a home Freedom Conference doubleheader from first-place Wilkes University, 7-4 and 18-6, on Saturday afternoon.
The wins improved Delaware Valley to 19-12 overall and 6-9 in conference action while the Colonels, who still sealed up the top seed in the upcoming Freedom playoffs despite the two losses, fell to 26-9 and 11-5.
The Aggies honored their four seniors –
Rob Galdieri,
Anthony Perry,
Joel Porambo and
Kevin Weingart – on Saturday and the quartet came through. Galderi picked up the win in the nightcap while Perry went a combined 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Porambo knocked in a run the second game and Weingart went a combined 5-for-8 with four runs scored and four RBIs.
Weingart and
Mike Isgro had back-to-back RBI triples in the third inning of the opener to give Delaware Valley a 2-1 lead. Wilkes tied it in the fourth but the Aggies came back with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 5-2 advantage.
Kellen Jarrett had an RBI single in the fifth while a
Dan Hrubos RBI triple and an Isgro sacrifice fly accounted for the damage in the sixth.
The Colonels made things interesting in the eighth as Andrew Garofoli had an RBI triple and then scored on a ground out by Joel Watson to make it a one-run contest. However, Isgro picked up RBIs three and four as his two-run double have Delaware Valley some breathing room at 7-4.
Chris Albaugh came out of the bullpen and notched his first save of the year.
Brian Hafer picked up his third win in five decisions and he went eight inning and allowed four runs and eight hits. Isgro finished 2-for-4 with the four RBIs while Weingart was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Al Clocker was 3-for-3 for Wilkes while Garofoli went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the second game, Delaware Valley scored all 18 of its runs in first five innings, including a six spot in the opening stanza. The Aggies had five hits in the inning and also took advantage of three Colonel miscues.
Bobby Oakes had the big blow as his single with the bases loaded plated two runners and both he and the remaining runner scored on a throwing error on the play.
Delaware Valley then used the long ball to account for five of the next six runs. After Weingart drove in one with a single in the second, Isgro hit a solo bomb later in the inning for an 8-2 lead. Then in the third, Hrubos smashed a grand slam home run down the right field line for a 12-4 advantage. The Aggies added three more in both the fourth and the fifth innings, en route to the 18-6 final.
Hrubos was a triple shy of the cycle as the freshman went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Weingart was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs while Oakes finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Isgro,
Zach Chodur and
Kellen Jarrett scored three times apiece in the victory. Galdieri went five innings and allowed just three earned runs.
Garofoli went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Wilkes. Watson was also 2-for-4 and scored twice in the contest.
