DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College racked up 21 runs and 16 hits in the first game then needed a late rally in the nightcap as the Aggies took a pair of Freedom Conference games from Eastern University, 21-5 and 12-10.
Delaware Valley improved to 16-9 overall and 3-7 in the conference with the sweep. The Aggies will quickly return to Freedom action on Saturday as they host Manhattanville College. The losses dropped Eastern to 3-23 overall and 0-10 in its first year in the league.
It was all Delaware Valley in the opener as the squad scored in seven of the eight innings it batted in (the Aggies served as the home team in the first game as it was a makeup from yesterday's postponement in Doylestown). In addition to the 16 hits, they took advantage of 10 Eagle errors.
Delaware Valley put the game away with 10 runs over the third and fourth inning to turn a 4-1 lead into a 16-2 advantage.
Matt Barto had four RBIs in those two stanza as he notched a two-run double in the third and followed with a two-run single in the fourth.
Barto was one of five Aggies to have a multiple hit game and was also one of four players to knock in three or more runs. He finished the contest 3-for-5 with three runs scored and the four RBIs.
Dylan Saldutti went 4-for-6 and knocked in four runs while
Mike Isgro had three RBIs on a 3-for-4 showing.
Kellen Jarrett drove home three runs despite going 0-for-5 and
Gary Cooper was 2-for-5 with four runs scored. Shortstop
Zach Chodur went 2-for-6 at the plate and set a Delaware Valley single-game record by scoring six runs.
Sean Tappan went six strong innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.
The Aggies started off slowly in the nightcap as they went scoreless for the first four innings and trailed 2-0. They hit the board for four runs in the fifth, but Eastern countered with six tallies in the bottom of the stanza to regain the lead at 8-4.
The teams traded run in the sixth before Delaware Valley pulled to within one at 9-8 thank to a three spot in the top of the seventh inning.
Matt Giberson had the key hit in the stanza thanks to a two-run double.
In the top of the eighth,
Kevin Weingart singled and moved to second on a ground out. After the second out of the inning, Isgro stepped to the plate and the 2008 all-Freedom honoree smacked an opposite-field home run, his third of the season, to give the Aggies the lead for good.
Delaware Valley added two more runs in the ninth on RBI doubles by Cooper and Weingart. Eastern got one back in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at the plate with just one out. However,
Zack Holm got the next two batters to preserve the sweep. Holm picked up the win thanks to two-plus inning of strong relief.
Isgro's home run was hit lone hit of the game as he went 1-for-4. Weingart was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Giberson went 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in two. Cooper finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Andre Butler and Andrew Reynolds had three hits apiece for the Eagles. Butler also scored three runs while Reynolds drove in two.
