KING'S SWEEPS CONFERENCE TWINBILL FROM AGGIES

WILKES-BARRE (PA) – King's College rallied late in the opening game and then racked up 24 hits in the nightcap as the Monarchs swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from visiting Delaware Valley College, 5-4 in 10 innings and 19-6.

King's improved its record to 16-6 overall and 5-1 in the Freedom while the Aggies fell to 13-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

The opener saw Delaware Valley take a 1-0 lead in the second on freshman Matt Barto's third home run of the season. The Monarchs tied it up in the bottom of the stanza, but the Aggies regained the lead in the fifth as Mike Thomas delivered a two-out, two-run single to plate Barto and Kellen Jarrett.

Mike Figar's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth knotted the game at 3-3 and it stayed that way until the top of the eighth when Delaware Valley scored an unearned run. Mike Isgro reached on an error and Kellen Jarrett followed with a single. After a pair of outs, Gary Cooper smacked a double into the left-center field gap to bring home Isgro.

However, the Aggies could not hold until the lead as Jeremy Bonser led off the ninth with a double and Phil Moskowitz came in as a pinch-runner. He moved up to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielding error to make it a 4-4 ballgame and send it to extra innings.

In the 10th, Delaware Valley had a chance to score as Isgro led off with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and balk. However, a strikeout and a pop-up left him stranded. King's then won it in the bottom of the stanza as Jon Venarchick singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored Matt Unger's sacrifice fly to center.

Barto was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and the homer. Thomas went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Jarrett was 2-for-3. Isgro started on the mound and went seven strong innings. Brian Hafer took the loss in relief.

The nightcap was all Monarchs as they scored in all but one of the innings they batted in, including five spots in both the fourth and fifth stanzas. Sean Rooney was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and four RBI's while Matt Unger scored three runs and drove in three with a 2-for-5 effort.

Delaware Valley received solo home runs from Barto and Kevin Weingart in the game. Barto finished the second contest 2-for-4 while Weingart was 1-for-4. Zach Holm started and suffered the loss.
