CENTER VALLEY (PA) – Mike Newland's RBI double with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted DeSales University to an 8-7 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
The Aggies saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 12-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Bulldogs improved their overall record to 9-7. The teams will meet in Doylestown for a nine-inning contest on Friday.
Delaware Valley held leads of 4-0 and 6-3 before DeSales rallied and took a 7-6 advantage into the ninth inning. With one out in the top of the stanza,
Zach Chodur and
Kevin Weingart each reached on fielding errors with Chodur going to third on the second miscue.
Mike Isgro then followed with a sacrifice fly top center to tie the contest.
However, the bottom of the ninth saw Greg Treat lead off with a single and then steal second to get into scoring position. Reliever Zack Kolm got Andrew Feher to strike out looking, but Newland followed with a shot into the left-center field gap to plate Treat with the game-winning run. It was his third hit and third RBI on the afternoon.
The Aggies scored four times in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Matt Barto, a bases loaded walk by
Dylan Saldutti and a two-run double by Chodur. DeSales scored two times in the fifth and added one more in the sixth to make it a one-run contest, but Delaware Valley used an RBI single by
Kevin Weingart and a run-scoring wild pitch in the top of the seventh for a 6-3 advantage.
The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Zachary Hess delivered a two-run double and Mike Bianca tied it up with a sacrifice fly. They then scored off an Aggie error for a 7-6 lead that held until the back-and-forth ninth inning.
Chodur and Isgro were each 2-for-4 and combined for two runs scored and three RBIs.
Brian Hafer started and allowed five earned runs in six innings. The loss by Holm dropped the sophomore to 1-1 on the year.
Joe Walsh picked up the win in relief and improved to 2-0 for DeSales. Hess was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Treat was 3-for-5 and scored two times.
