WILKES-BARRE (PA) – Wilkes University, ranked 14th in the latest womensfieldhockey.com poll, scored one goal in each half for a 2-0, Freedom Conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the Aggies' regular-season finale. The game was played on the King's College turf due to poor conditions on Wilkes' field.
Delaware Valley had a chance to move into second place in the Freedom and host a playoff game next week as King's was upset by DeSales earlier in the day. However, they finished the regular campaign 10-9 overall, 4-3 and tied for third with King's in the league. The Aggies will be the fourth seed as they dropped a decision to King's earlier in the year.
As a result, Delaware Valley will travel to top-seeded Eastern University for a Freedom Conference semifinal match-up on Wednesday, November 4 (2:30 p.m.). Wilkes will host King's in the other meeting. The Freedom Conference Championship Game will take place at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, November 7 with the champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Wilkes (14-2, 5-1) got all the offense it needed in the game's 25th minute as Brittany Sines scored off a corner opportunity with Jenna DiSabatino picking up the assist. The Lady Colonels added to their advantage just 7:10 into the second stanza as Cassie DiSabatino connected off a feed from Jennifer Keegan.
Wilkes outshot Delaware Valley, 18-12, while the Aggies held a 12-11 advantage in corners. Lindsey Davenport stopped eight shots to pick up the shutout while
Hollis Hancock made seven saves for Delaware Valley.
