Aggies in Action: Amelia Funston’s Summer as Herdsman Apprentice

| By:
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - This summer, Delaware Valley University softball player Amelia Funston is gaining hands-on experience in her dream field.

As a Herdsman Apprentice, Funston spends her days milking cows, caring for calves, and assisting with rotational grazing setup on a working farm. The early mornings and long, hot days haven't slowed her down—in fact, they've inspired her even more.

"My goal is to have my own small herd of dairy cows and make ice cream to sell locally," she said. "I also want to bring agricultural education to the youth in Doylestown and nearby communities."

Her work on the farm has pushed her out of her comfort zone, especially when learning to operate heavy machinery like tractors and skid steers for the first time.

"I was nervous, but I reminded myself that I'll need these skills in the future," she said. "I told myself, 'I can do this!' And I did."

Amelia credits her time as a Division III athlete at DelVal for building the grit and determination it takes to succeed in agriculture.

"Being on the softball team taught me how to push through tough days and give my best effort," she said. "That mindset has helped me get through those early wake-ups and long days on the farm."

Her advice for other student-athletes exploring similar opportunities? Don't hold back.

"Ask questions, even if it feels intimidating," she said. "Jump in, be curious, and don't be afraid to learn something new."
