Aggies in Action: Kathleen McGeoy’s Global Perspective from Italy

| By:

FLORENCE, Italy - This summer, Delaware Valley University softball player Kathleen McGeoy traded cleats for culture as she spent several weeks studying abroad in Italy. Through a course titled Health and Fitness in the Mediterranean at Florence University of the Arts, McGeoy explored how regional habits—like diet, movement, and mindset—impact overall wellness.

"We studied everything from nutrition and exercise to mental health practices, all within the context of Italian culture," she said. "The Mediterranean lifestyle's focus on balance, community, and enjoyment really opened my eyes."

Beyond the classroom, McGeoy embraced the opportunity to immerse herself in a new way of living. From communicating in another language to navigating a slower-paced lifestyle, she welcomed each challenge as a chance to grow.

"Being in another culture completely changed my perspective," she said. "It made me reflect on my own habits and how I can bring some of that intentionality and balance into my everyday life back home."

Her weekends were filled with unforgettable experiences—exploring iconic destinations like Rome, Venice, and Tuscany—but one memory stands above the rest: a boat tour through the stunning coastal villages of Cinque Terre.

"It was absolutely magical. A moment I'll never forget."

McGeoy credits her experience as a Division III athlete at DelVal with helping her make the most of her time abroad.

"Being a student-athlete taught me time management, discipline, and how to work well with others," she said. "Those skills helped me balance schoolwork with travel and fully engage with everything the program had to offer."

Her advice to other student-athletes considering study abroad?

"Go for it. Don't hesitate," she said. "You can absolutely be an athlete and study abroad. It'll challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with lifelong memories. Be open, embrace the culture, and don't be afraid to try something completely new."
