Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University could not get its offense going as visiting Ursinus College earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep by scores of 3-1 and 6-1.
The Bears improved to 15-19 on the season while the Aggies fell to 8-15.
Game one was a pitchers duel as DelVal sent
Jamie Stefani to the mound to battle Ursinus' pitcher Kaitlyn Willis. Through three innings, the two hurlers combined for eight strikeouts and neither had allowed a hit.
The Bears got the game's first hit in the fourth when Sammi Donato led off with a double, but she would be stranded at third base after a strikeout, a pop out and a ground out. The Aggies followed in their half of the inning with a two-out double from Stefani, but
Caitlin Stoner popped out in the next at-bat to end the threat.
In the sixth inning, the Bears got on the board with three unearned runs on one hit and four DelVal errors. Marissa Beebe, Renee LeClerc and Kayla Quinn scored.
In the bottom of the seventh, Stefani got aboard after being hit by a pitch and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Stoner. She moved to third on a single by
Morgan Hawk and came in to score when
Morgan Brown grounded out to third base. The Bears got the next batter to ground out to escape with the 3-1 win in the opener.
Stefani pitched all seven innings giving up three hits and striking out five with no earned runs. Hawk, Stefani and
Kayla Keller had the only three hits for DelVal's offense.
Willis also gave up just three hits in seven innings with one run and eight strikeouts. Beebe, Donato and LeClerc had the hits.
In game two, the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a triple to right center field by Faith Carson. Callie Crouse stepped up next and hit a sharp ground ball to the third and the Aggies turned a 5-3-2 double play to work out of the jam. Ursinus went back to work in the second and this time it was Kayla Quinn who delivered a three-run triple to center field. The Bears tacked on more in the inning to take a 6-0 lead after two.
Maddy O'Donohue got DelVal on the board in the bottom of the third with a double to left-center that scored Jess Ellick who was on first with a walk. The Aggies stranded runners on first and second to end the inning.
The two squads combined for one hit apiece and no runs the rest of the way and the Bears came away with the sweep and a 6-1 final.
Brown started game two in the circle and was replaced by Stefani with two outs in the second inning. Stefani pitched five-plus innings with five strikeouts and one hit.
Koraima Dudley was 1-for-2 at the dish with a run scored.
Devan Cinalli earned the win for Ursinus with one run and four hits against in seven innings of work. Carson and Quinn were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Quinn came around to score twice.
DelVal will wrap up its 2017 campaign on Saturday when they visit Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Eastern University for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
