Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Maddy O'Donohue hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to seal a home doubleheader sweep for Delaware Valley University over FDU-Florham, 6-3 and 7-6, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom showdown.
The Aggies improved to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in conference play while the Devils dropped to 11-20 and 4-8.
DelVal gave
Jamie Stefani the ball for game one and the pitcher helped her own cause in the bottom of the first as she blasted a two-run homer over the right-center fence to make it 2-0.
With the bases loaded in the second,
Kayla Keller drove in
Morgan Brown and Jess Ellick came in to score on a passed ball to make it 4-0. The Aggies added two more in the frame on RBI singles from
Kelsey Stoneberg and
Morgan Hawk.
FDU-Florham did not get on the board until the fifth inning when Paige Lillie sent a triple down the right field line that scored Michelle Mangini. Lillie then came in to score on a sacrifice fly to center by Rebecca DeCarlo.
Mangini picked up another RBI in the sixth with a single up the middle, but the Devils did not get any more runs as DelVal took game one, 6-3.
Stefani was 2-for-2 from the dish with two runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Brown and Hawk each picked up two hits with Brown scoring once and Hawk earning an RBI. On the mound, Stefani pitched seven innings and gave up just four hits while striking out seven.
For FDU, Lillie and Mangini each had one hit, one run scored and one RBI. Audrie Thomas took the loss.
In game two, DelVal scored two runs in the first inning again. This time, it was an RBI single from Stefani and an RBI bunt single by
Caitlin Stoner.The Devils cut their deficit in half in the second after an error allowed Mangini to cross the plate.
However, the Aggies rallied in the fourth for four runs on three hits and one error. Stefani started the rally by working a bases loaded walk and an error on the next play brought in O'Donohue. Stoner then stepped up and delivered a double that plated two and made it 6-1.
In the next half inning, FDU-Florham climbed back by scoring four runs on just one hit. The first two runs were the result of an error and a wild pitch and a ground out brought in the third. Mangini then hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Taylor Torre and put the Devils down one, 6-5.
FDU-Florham tied the game in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single by Gabby Young that plated Liz Kelly. Each team stranded a runner on second base in the seventh inning and the game continued into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, both squads had runners at second and third and failed to drive in any runs as the Aggies got a double play to end the Devils' threat. FDU-Florham went down in order in the top of the ninth inning and DelVal capitalized. Brown and
Hannah Kantorski led off with back-to-back singles and Ellick worked a walk to load the bases. After a ground out, O'Donohue stepped up with a single to the left side and Kantorski came around for the game-winning run.
O'Donohue and Stefani each had three hits and two runs scored with one and two RBIs respectively. Stoner had two hits and three RBIs while Kantorski and Stoneberg also notched a pair of hits. Brown started the game on the mound and went five innings before Stefani came in to earn the win and record five strikeouts.
For the Devils, Tara Morash was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Kelly had two hits with one run scored. Thomas pitched five-plus innings in relief and suffered the loss.
DelVal will host Cedar Crest College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 25 (3 p.m.).
