DelVal Softball Drops Pair Of MAC Freedom Games At Wilkes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University outhit host Wilkes University on the day, but suffered a pair of Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom defeats, 1-0 and 3-1.

The Colonels improved to 18-8 overall and 7-3 in the MAC Freedom while the Aggies fell to 1-7 and 4-9.

Wilkes scored the lone run of the opener in the third inning after Lacey Bixler got aboard with a lead-off single and was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. She came in to score the winning run after a throwing error.

DelVal had a golden opportunity to get on the board in the seventh inning as Maddy O'Donohue led off with a double and was followed by a single up the middle from Kelsey Stoneberg. After Stoneberg stole second, the Colonels catcher wisely threw behind O'Donohue at third base and she was tagged out. Jamie Stefani, who was at the plate, walked and the ensuing two batters were retired to end the ballgame.

Stefani pitched six innings, striking out seven and giving up just two hits. O'Donohue and Stoneberg both had two hits as DelVal managed seven hits as a team compared to two for Wilkes.

In game two, the Colonels scored two unearned runs in the first inning off of a single from Gracen Staunton that plated Haley Welker and Sarah Gibson.

The Aggies got one back when they executed a suicide squeeze in the fourth inning. Jess Burns laid down the bunt as Gina Formisano sprinted home from third base to make it 2-1.

Wilkes tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and stranded a DelVal runner on base in the seventh to earn the sweep with a 3-1 win.

Stefani pitched the nightcap again and surrendered six hits with one earned run and three punch outs. Burns, Formisano and Morgan Brown notched singles while Stoneberg picked a triple for the Aggies four hits.

To go with her two RBIs, Staunton pitched seven innings of four-hit ball with eight strike outs for Wilkes.
