Stefani Breaks Two Pitching Records, DelVal Softball Sweeps MAC-Freedom Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University freshman Jamie Stefani pitched a pair of complete-game victories and broke the school's single-game and single-season records for strikeouts in the process as the Aggies notched 4-2 and 5-4 home triumph over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival Eastern University.

DelVal, which has a roster comprised of just freshmen and sophomores, improved to 13-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play thanks to the twinbill sweep. The Aggies are in fifth place in the MAC Freedom standings, just one game behind both FDU-Florham and Misericordia University with six league contests remaining (the top four teams advance to the conference tournament). DelVal travels to Misericordia for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. Eastern fell to 7-17 overall and 2-6 in the MAC Freedom with Thursday's setbacks.

Stefani kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the first six innings of each contest. In the opener, she permitted just four hits through six innings while the offense put four runs on the board. Two came in the fourth, thanks to a two-run, two-out single by Katelynn Reed. Then in the fifth, Ashley Rice and Kelly Gruber smacked back-to-back doubles for one run while another scored when Morgan Brown was a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Eastern began a rally in the top of the seventh as, with two outs, Maria Day and Deanna Laughman had RBI singles. The tying runs were on bases, but Stefani got a ground out to second to end the game. Both runs were unearned as Stefani picked up win number eight on the season. She also fanned 12 batters to top the previous Aggie record of 10 that Greer McComas set against FDU-Florham in 2010.

Stefani got the call again in game two and cruised through the first six innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. The seven K's upped her season total to 83 and surpassed Jennifer Bummer's mark of 80 strikeouts during the 2008 campaign.

Stefani also her helped her own cause by drilling a solo home run in the fifth inning, her second of the season to give DelVal a 3-0 lead. The first two tallies came in the bottom of the first as Kelsey Stoneberg and Brown each knocked in runs with singles.

As they did in the first game, the Eagles found their offense in the seventh. This time, they were able to take the lead as RBI singles by Taylor Crown and Haleigh Williams made it a one-run game, and Kelsey Clever followed with a two-run homer over the left field fence.

The Aggies regrouped in the bottom of the seventh as, after a leadoff out, Rice drilled a double to left-center field. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and remained 90 feet from home when Gruber reached on a fielder's choice. Eastern pitched around Stefani to load the bases and it brought fellow freshman Maddy O'Donohue to the plate. During O'Donohue's at-bat, a pitch went to the backstop and Rice came in to score the tying run while Gruber and Stefani moved up a base. O'Donohue fouled off several pitches before sending a 3-2 pitch down the left field line. It was caught deep in foul territory and Gruber tagged up for the walk-off win.

Six different Aggies had a hit in the nightcap while Stefani was 1-for-1 with the home run and three walks. Clever was 1-for-3 with the two-run homer for the Eagles.
