Box Score 2 TITUSVILLE (FL) – The Delaware Valley University softball team split a non-conference twinbill with Iowa Wesleyan University on the team's Spring Break trip to Florida. The Aggies dropped a 6-3 decision in the opener, but bounced back with a 9-6 triumph in the nightcap.
The split moved DelVal's record to 4-2, topping last year's victory total for the entire season (3-25). The Tigers saw their mark go to 2-4.
The second game was tied at 1-1 until the Aggies struck for four runs in the third and two more in the fourth. In the third, Morgan had the big blow with a two-run double. Brown drove in another tally in the fourth as she drew a bases loaded walk.
Kelsey Stoneberg knocked in runs in both innings.
Iowa Wesleyan came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but DelVal made it a 9-3 contest in the sixth as a run scored on a passed ball while
Taryn Matti drove one in with a single. The Tigers rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run at the plate before pitcher
Jamie Stefani got a ground out to end the game.
Stefani improved to 3-0 as the freshman did not allow an earned run while giving up 10 hits and fanning eight. Stoneberg was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Brown drove in three in a 1-for-4 showing.
Maddy O'Donohue was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBU while
Kelly Gruber had two hits and scored three runs.
The opener saw Iowa Wesleyan scored three runs on five hits in the first inning, including a two-run double by pitcher Hannah Mixer. DelVal got one back in the second on a passed ball before the Tigers made it 4-1 in the fourth.
The Aggies used an RBI double from Brown in the fifth and a run-scoring single from
Katelynn Reed in the sixth to pull to within one. However, Mixer drove in one of two Iowa Wesleyan runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Mixer was 2-for-4 with three RBI and went the distance on the mound.
Reed (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Stefani (2-for-3, 1 run scored) had multiple hits in the first game.
Kaytee Mattern suffered the loss.
DelVal wraps up its trip on Thursday when it meets Concordia College and Penn State Beaver in single games.
