DelVal Softball Sweeps Two From MAC Freedom Foe Wilkes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University softball team notched its first sweep of a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader in four years as the Aggies posted 5-4 and 7-4 decisions over visiting Wilkes University.

DelVal's young squad (the roster consists of just freshmen and sophomores) is now 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The eight wins has already surpassed the total of victories (six) that they recorded in head coach Corey Heulitt's first two years at DelVal. Thursday was also the first MAC Freedom twinbill sweep since the Aggies took a pair at the end of the 2012 campaign.

DelVal jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as it sent nine players to the plate and recorded four hits. Jamie Stefani drove in the first run with a double. A single and a walk followed to load the bases. Ashley Rice drew a walk to make it 2-0 and Maddy O'Donohue (single) and Nicole Ebersole (fielder's choice) knocked in runs.

The Lady Colonels (5-9, 1-3) recorded single tallies in the third and fifth innings. Down to their last three outs, they put runners on second and third with out. Grace Sanzalone then singled into the outfield and it was misplayed on the bounce. Both runs scored to tie the game, but Sanzalone was thrown out trying to make it to third. A strikeout followed and the game headed to the bottom of the seventh.

Stefani opened the stanza with a double down the right field line and Mandi Workman came in to pinch run for her. After a pair of outs, Workman moved up to third on a wild pitch. Rice then ripped a 2-1 pitch up the middle for the walk-off single.

Rice finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Stefani was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Morgan Brown allowed two earned runs over seven innings for the win. Nicole Cumbo took the loss for Wilkes.

The Aggies got off to another quick start in the second game as they scored a run in the first and put four on the board in the second for a 5-0 lead. Kelsey Stoneberg had an RBI single in the first and added a three-run double in the second. O'Donohue had the remaining RBI.

The Lady Colonels picked up their first two runs in the third on a home run by Ally Paskas. They then made it a 5-4 contest in the top of the sixth thanks to an error and a sacrifice fly by Haley Welker.

However, DelVal got the two back in the bottom of the seventh as an error gave the team a baserunner. After the second out was recorded, Stoneberg came to the plate. She drew a full count and fouled off five straight pitches before sending the next delivery over the left-center field fence for her team-best fourth home run of the season. It also gave her six RBI in the game to tie a school single-season record.

Stefani improved to 5-3 as the freshmen allowed just two earned runs in seven innings. Koraima Dudley added two hits and three runs scored in the win. Paskas was 1-for-4 with the two-run homer for Wilkes. Christina Gambino permitted just one earned run but suffered the loss.

DelVal returns to action on Tuesday, March 29 when it hosts Cedar Crest College for a non-conference doubleheader.
