FDU-Florham Takes Two From Aggie Softball In MAC Freedom Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MADISON (NJ) – The FDU-Florham softball team took both games of a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader against Delaware Valley University on Saturday.

The Devils took the first game, 25-4 in five innings and rallied to win the second, 8-7. The Aggies dropped to 5-6 overall and the Devils improved to 6-4. It was the conference opener for both teams. The twin bill was originally scheduled for Sunday but was moved up in anticipation of inclement weather.

In the opener, FDU-Florham recorded five runs in the first, 11 in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth. Rebecca DeCarlo, Nikki Caruso and Paige Lillie all hit home runs in the contest.

All four of DelVal's runs came in the third inning. Sophomore second baseman Kelly Gruber led off with a single. Sophomore shortstop Koraima Dudley bunted for a base hit and, after a pop out, sophomore left fielder Kelsey Stoneberg smacked a three-run shot to center field. With two outs, freshman first baseman/pitcher Morgan Brown hit a long ball to center.

Sydney Worek threw all five innings for the Devils while sophomore Ashley Rice took the loss (1-1).

Both teams scored in the first inning of game two. Freshman catcher Maddy O'Donohue went deep to center for a two-run homer and Caruso had a RBI single for FDU-Florham. Freshman pitcher Jamie Stefani restored the two-run lead with a solo shot over the right field fence in the second. Dudley's RBI base hit in the fourth made the score 4-1.

The Devils tallied three runs on an error in the fourth to tie the game. Stoneberg had her second homer of the day in the fifth and Stefani doubled in a run. In the sixth, Stoneberg hit a sacrifice fly to score Gruber and the Aggies went to the bottom of the seventh up 7-4.

With one out, Caruso reached on an error and came home on a double by Wynne McCann. Taylor Torre singled and Lillie hit a RBI double. Torre scored on a groundout to tie the game. Jaclyn Herrington followed with a walk-off single to center field to secure the sweep.

Worek picked up the win in relief to move to 4-1. Stefani suffered the loss (3-3).

On the day, Rebecca DeCarlo, Lillie and Caruso all went five-for-seven. Lillie and DeCarlo both had two doubles and a home run while Caruso also went yard. Lillie and Caruso drove in four runs and scored five times apiece. Herrington knocked in five runs and Marlena Bevilacqua touched the plate five times.

Dudley was five-for-seven with one RBI and two runs scored on the day for DelVal. Stoneberg finished with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored. Stefani and O'Donohue totaled two RBI apiece and Brown had one.
