Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Rain and the pitching of Cabrini College started Jess Giordano spoiled Delaware Valley University's home opener as the Cavaliers took a 2-0 decision in a six inning contest. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled because of the weather.
The Aggies fell to 5-4 on the young season while Cabrini picked up its second win in seven contests.
The game was a pitcher's duel between Giordano and DelVal freshman
Jamie Stefani as neither game up a run through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, a pair of singles and a costly DelVal error loaded the bases with one out. Stefani then got a strikeout on Sarah Beckner, but the pitch was in the dirt and went towards the backstop. Beckner reached first safely and all runners moved up a base including Marissa Alpaugh with the first tally of the game.
The Cavaliers got a rally going with two outs in the fifth as Kaitlyn Cooper walked and moved to second on an infield single by Alpaugh. Giordano then helped her own cause with an RBI double to center.
DelVal threatened in the sixth as an
Ashley Rice single, a bunt single by
Kelly Gruber and walk to
Maddy O'Donohue loaded the bases with just one out. However, Giordano got a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning. Lightning was then reported in the area, causing a delay. That eventually turned into the end of the game as rain made the field unplayable.
Giordano finished with a four-hit shutout and was also 2-for-3 at the plate. Stefani allowed just one earned run and seven hits over six innings. She walked one and fanned six.
The Aggies are scheduled to begin Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play on Sunday, March 20 with a doubleheader against FDU-Florham.
