DelVal Softball Battles Hard In Pair Of Losses At Playoff-Bound Eastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ST. DAVIDS (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's softball team dropped a pair of tight, Freedom Conference contests to host Eastern University by scores of 4-1 and 9-8.

With Tuesday's impending games with Swarthmore being canceled, Saturday's doubleheader marked the conclusion of the Aggies 2015 campaign in which they finished 3-25 overall and 1-13 in league play. The Eagles improved to 15-17 overall and 11-3 in the Freedom as they will head into the conference postseason as the number two seed.

Delaware Valley's Hannah Robinson led off game one with her third triple of the season and came around to score on a Kelsey Stoneberg double to left field for the early 1-0 lead after one inning.
Eastern came back in the bottom second and took the lead after a two run single from Deanna Laughman plated two unearned runs due to a pair of Aggie fielding errors. The Eagles added in their half of the fourth thanks to a solo home run from Kelsey Clever, and one more in the sixth off a Delaware Valley error.

The Aggies had a chance to come back in the top of the seventh after Stoneberg and Rice led off with a pair of singles. Sydney Edwards was the next batter, but her grounder back to the pitcher resulted in Stoneberg being retired at third base. The next two Aggies were also retired and the game went final, 4-1.

Stoneberg and Rice were each 2-for-3 in the opening contest while Robinson was 1-for-3 with the only run scored. Rice was also effective on the mound, surrendering just one earned run and four hits while notching four strikeouts. Eastern's four hits came from four different players including Laughman, who recorded three of the teams four RBIs. Haleigh Williams pitched a complete game allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out eight.

The nightcap saw Delaware Valley open up a 4-1 lead after three innings of play. Nicole Ebersole scored the first run in the top of the first after reaching on a single and coming around to score on a number of Eagle miscues. Edwards then led off the top of the second with a solo shot to center field for her second homer of the year. The bats stayed hot into the third as Rice connected for a two-run bomb of her own, also to center field.

Eastern got one back in the bottom of the third after Kasey Williams singled to left field to score Laughman who led off the inning with a walk. The Eagles then took the lead in the fourth, thanks to four runs on four hits. Kasey Williams and Emily Houck each picked up a pair two-run doubles.

The Aggies were resilient and responded with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead. After the first out, they mustered five straight singles, including a two-run hit by Edwards, for an 8-5 lead.

However, in the home half of the inning, Eastern responded with another four spot, including two off a single from Houck, for a 9-8 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth the Aggies loaded the bases with one out but failed to capitalize. They were then retired in order in the seventh to end the game and the season.

Edwards and Gruber were 2-for-3 for Delaware Valley in the nightcap, with Edwards tallying three RBIs and two runs scored. Rice added two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. For Eastern, Williams and Houck each notched three hits and four RBIs.
