Box Score 2 PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College scored a combined 31 runs on 24 hits to complete a two game sweep of visiting Freedom Conference foe Delaware Valley University, 12-0 and 19-11. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
In game one, the Valiants (10-15, 2-7 Freedom) needed just one inning to open up a 9-0 lead thanks to six hits and one error in the top of the first. They added three more in the third.
Pitchers Rosaria Callara and Alicia Marino combined for the five-inning shutout surrendering just one hit a piece and striking out a combined five batters. Alexis Ventarola was 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs while Shelbee Damianos was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs.
Hannah Robinson and
Kelsey Stoneberg had the lone hits for the Aggies (1-21, 1-11).
In the second contest, Delaware Valley was able to get on the board in the first inning when Robinson led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from
Kelly Gruber. Manhattanville responded the same way it did in the opening game with a nine-run bottom of the first inning, this time, on seven hits.
Delaware Valley got one back in the top of the second when
Sydney Edwards hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a ground out to first and came around to score when
Lauren Alvarez grounded out to second. In the bottom of the frame, the Valiants put up six runs on five hits, including back-to-back home runs from Damianos and Adrena Daw.
The Aggies found their offensive groove in the fourth inning where they connected for seven runs on three hits and one error to pull to within four at 15-11. Delaware Valley got its first three hitters on base and Alvarez picked up her second RBI of the game on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. The Aggies were then forced to rally with two outs and did just that as
Ashley Rice laced a single to center field to score Brandi Skodzinski.
Nicole Ebersole was the next batter and worked a walk to score another followed by a single from Gruber to score Rice. Delaware Valley got two more runs in the inning off of walks.
The Aggies, needing a shutdown inning the bottom of the fourth, were unable to hold off the Valiants, who spoiled the comeback bid with a four-run stanza. In the top of the fifth, Delaware Valley got two runs back after a leadoff single, three walks and a sacrifice fly by Gruber.
Gruber was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored in the second game while Alvarez and Ebersole each knocked in a pair. Robinson was 1-for-1 and worked three walks while scoring twice.
Ventarola was 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Brittany Deieso had three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for Manhattanville.
