Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Four Misericordia University pitchers combined to notch a pair of shutouts as the Cougars swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from host Delaware Valley University, 11-0 and 5-0.
Misericordia upped its record to 14-8 overall and 7-1 in league action while the Aggies slipped to 1-13 and 1-5.
The Cougars opened the first game by sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the first. They had five hits and took advantage of four Delaware Valley errors. They added three runs in the fourth and finished the game, which ended after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule, with seven hits.
Meanwhile, the Misericordia pitchers permitted just two hits, singles by
Ashley Rice in the fourth and
Nicole Ebersole in the first. Alissa Steier went the first three innings and got the win while Jordan Hoffman and Andi Veneziale went one stanza apiece. Rice took the loss despite giving up just one earned run in three innings of work.
In the second contest, the first two Cougars batters were retired, but an error and a single kept the inning alive. Megan Hardy then drilled a three-run homer over the right-center field fence for a 3-0 advantage. Misericordia later added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings for the 5-0 final.
Steier, Hoffman and Maddie Stebich permitted just three hits. Steier started and went the first two while Stebich went four innings and earned the win.
Ebersole pitched a strong game for Delaware Valley as she allowed just two earned runs and eight hits over seven innings. She also struck out three batters.
