EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Laykin Hughes hurled a one-hitter in the first game while Brooke Chapin had a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as host Wilkes University posted a Freedom Conference doubleheader sweep over Delaware Valley College, 7-1 and 8-0. The second game was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The lone hit off Hughes came in the first inning when
Krystle Mazza singled through the left side to score
Allison Tomasino, who led off the game with a walk. It was Mazza's team-best 26th RBI of the year for the Aggies (8-20, 0-2).
Wilkes (13-19, 4-8) responded with three run in the bottom of the first and added three more in the third. The Lady Colonels put their final tally on the board in the sixth and they finished with 14 hits in the game. Alysha Bixler was 3-for-4 with five RBIs while Alex Hoops and Mandy Seccia also had three hits apiece. Hughes finished with 11 strikeouts.
Wilkes quickly struck in the nightcap as it scored three runs in the first and added four more in the second. The big blow was a three-run homer by Bixler. The Lady Colonels then ended the contest with two outs in the fifth as Jessalyn Paveletz drove in Michelle Coyle with a single. Bixler was 1-for-3 with the three RBIs while Paveletz was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Brittney Jones was 2-for-2 for Delaware Valley while Tomasino had the remaining hit to leave the senior just two shy of the 100-hit mark for her career.
Whitney Stacey, who allowed just three earned runs in each game, took both losses.
