DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Moravian College head coach John Byrne reached the 600-win plateau in his career as the Greyhounds posted a pair of non-conference wins over host Delaware Valley College, 7-2 and 4-1.
In his 19th year at the helm of Moravian, Byrne became the 14th active Division III coach and the 20th overall to reach the memorable milestone. The wins also improved the Greyhounds to 19-7 on the year while the Aggies fell to 8-13.
In the opener, Moravian got on the board in the first as a wild pitch allowed Jenna Carmon to cross home plate. It remained a 1-0 contest until the fourth when the Greyhounds notched four runs on six hits. Miranda Sergas had the big blow in the inning with a two-run, two-out triple.
Moravian added a run in the sixth on an Aggie error. Delaware Valley got on the board in the sixth as
Jackie Wear singled and came around to score on an
Erin Fox double.
Dani Walton then followed with an RBI single to knock in Fox for a 6-2 ballgame. Moravian notched its final run of game one in the seventh as Sergas delivered an RBI double.
Sergas was 4-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Dior George added three hits and two runs scored in five at-bats. Carmon pitched the full seven innings and allowed just two runs on nine hits.
Wear was 3-for-5 while Fox was 2-for-4 for Delaware Valley. Freshman
Alexis Boucher went four innings and took the loss.
In the nightcap, Lizzie Mack picked up her third win of the season as she took a shutout into the seventh inning. She finished with just one run allowed and nine hits while fanning five. Mack also helped her own cause by going 2-for-3, including an RBI single in the fourth.
Sergas continued her strong day as she followed George's double with a two-bagger of her own in the third inning. Sergas then scored on an RBI single by Cassie Ernst. Moravian's final run came in the seventh on an RBI single by Amanda Dizinno.
Delaware Valley spoiled Mack's shutout bid in the seventh as
Allison Tomasino doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Fox. Tomasino went 3-for-4 while Fox (2-for-4) and
Sarah Lazar (2-for-3) had two hits apiece.
Whitney Stacey allowed just three runs in five-plus innings, but took the loss.
