RECORDS FALL IN PAIR OF LOSSES TO URSINUS

COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Erin Fox and Jackie Wear tied or set a Delaware Valley College single-season record, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies were swept by host Ursinus College, 6-4 and 16-14, in a non-conference doubleheader.

Fox , who entered the twinbill as the seventh leading batter in Division III with a .516 average, went a combined 2-for-8 with a double and triple. The senior knocked in four runs to give her 36 on the year and tie Lorie Kochanski's mark from 1995.

Wear, a sophomore, went 5-for-9 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs in the two contests. She extended her single-seasons records in both hits (54) and doubles (18) and also set a new standard for runs scored with 35. That topped Stephanie McCormick's total of 33 from the '95 campaign.

The opener saw Delaware Valley (14-17) cut its gap to one, 4-3, by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth as Fox ripped a two-run triple. However, the Bears (22-15) responded with two in their half of the inning and the Aggies managed just runner (Wear with a double in the seventh) over the final two innings.

Wear had three of the team's nine hits in the first game. Kasey Martini was a perfect 2-for-2 while Alexis Boucher pitched four innings and took the loss. Amy Gentile and Allison Pfrommer knocked in two runs apiece for Ursinus.

A wild second game saw the two teams combined for 36 hits, including 13 that went for extra bases (eight doubles, three triples, two home runs). Delaware Valley jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Fox and Wear had two RBIs apiece during that spurt thanks to a double and a home run respectively.

Ursinus then racked up seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third to take a one-run lead. Pfrommer's three-run triple and Monica Bonitatis' two-run homer keyed the stanza. The Aggies tied the game in the top of the fourth on a Dani Walton RBI single, but the Bears answered with two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth for a 10-7 advantage.

Then came an explosive sixth inning as Delaware Valley connected for seven runs off six hits and one Ursinus error. Walton knocked the first two runs with a double and Krystle Mazza brought in the third with a bunt single. Nina Stachura's two-run single made it a 12-10 ballgame. Wear reached on an error that brought in another run and Stachura scored on an RBI single by Jess Bensinger to make it 14-10.

The lead didn't last as the Bears struck for six runs on six hits and two Aggie miscues in the bottom of the sixth. After they loaded the bases with no outs, Bonitatis had a two-double and Emelie McFarland followed with a two-run triple to tie the contest. Jennilyn Weber gave Ursinus the lead with an RBI single and Gentile added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Delaware Valley then went in order in the seventh to end the contest.

Bontitatis was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs while Pfrommer was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs for Ursinus. Weber, who went the distance in game one, picked up the nightcap win in relief.

Wear was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Martine went 4-for-5 and scored three times while Walton was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Keri Hardiman took the loss out of the bullpen.
