LATE-INNING DRAMATICS GIVE AGGIES TWINBILL SWEEP OF FDU

MADISON (NJ) – Krystle Mazza smacked a seventh-inning home run for the winning tally in game one and the Delaware Valley College offense exploded for seven extra-inning runs in the nightcap as the Aggies swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader at FDU-Florham, 5-4 and 14-7.

The sweep gave Delaware Valley victories in six of its last seven contests as the Aggies improved to 14-15 overall and 4-8 in the Freedom. The Devils fell to 13-15 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

Delaware Valley trailed 3-1 and 4-2 in the opener with its first two runs scoring as a result of FDU-Florham errors. In the sixth, Jackie Wear hit a one-out, solo home run to make it a one-run contest. It was Wear's third home run over the last two games and her fifth of the season.

After Wear's round-tripper, Kasey Martini drew a walk and moved to third on Jess Bensinger's double to right-center. Martini then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The game was still 4-4 heading into the seventh when FDU-Florham pitcher Megan McInaw retired the first two Aggies on a fly out and a strikeout. Mazza stepped into the plate and number nine hitter deposited the ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season and a 5-4 advantage. It was Mazza's lone hit of the game as she went 1-for-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, FDU-Florham put a runner on with a one out, but a fielder's choice and line out ended the game. Keri Hardiman pitched the final four innings in relief and got the win. Bensinger was 3-for-4 while Wear was 2-for-4.

The nightcap saw Delaware Valley load the bases with one out in the first when Dani Walton came through with a two-run single for the early lead. The Devils came back with one in their half of the first and added two more in the second. Delaware Valley regained the lead with two runs in the third (a two-run single by Allison Tomasino) and a tally in the fourth (sacrifice by Walton).

FDU-Florham regained the lead at 6-5 as it scored three runs on five hits and one Aggie error in the fifth inning. McInaw, Christina Legotti and Karla Babb had the RBIs in the stanza.

Back came Delaware Valley in the top of the sixth as Walton singled through the right side for RBIs number four and five in the contest. However, the Devils tied it up at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth Elizabeth Spiller walked, stole second and scored on a single by Brianne Faynor. Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

The Aggies had nine hits over the first seven innings and nearly matched that total in the eight. They sent 13 batters to the plate and racked up seven runs on eight hits. Bensinger, Erin Fox and Walton began the stanza with consecutive singles to load the bases. Tomasino followed with a single of her own to score Bensinger. After an out was recorded, Sarah Lazar and Mazza made it 10-7 with back-to-back RBI singles. Wear followed with a two-run double to left-center and a hit batsman reloaded the bases. That brought Bensinger back to the plate and she singled up the middle to bring in two runs for a 14-7 victory.

Walton finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs while Tomasino was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Bensinger was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs while Fox, Mazza and Kasey Martini had two hits apiece. Wear went 2-for-5 and broke the school's single-season record for hits as her 49 knocks topped Lorie Kochanski's total of 47 from 1995. Wear also scored twice and knocked in two. Hardiman picked up another win in relief.
