CENTER VALLEY (PA) – DeSales University put 25 runs and 23 hits on the board as the Bulldogs swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from host Delaware Valley College, 11-4 and 14-4.
DeSales improved its record to 4-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference while the Aggies saw their marks drop to 6-5 and 0-4.
The opener saw Delaware Valley score twice in the second inning, including one on an RBI single by
Jess Bensinger. DeSales answered in the top of the third as Julie Brugger smacked a two-run homer. Delaware Valley then took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the stanza as
Jackie Wear singled, moved to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on a single by
Dani Walton.
It remained a one-run contest until the top of the fifth when the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs on seven hits and four Aggie errors. They sent 13 batters to the plate, including doubles by Carly Bartholomew and Taylor Kelly. Sarah Giammarese knocked in two runs with a single.
Delaware Valley added its final run in the bottom of the fifth as
Erin Fox drilled her third home run of the season. Fox was 2-for-4 while Bensinger and Wear were each 2-for-3.
Whitney Stacey suffered the loss.
Christine Petrilla allowed just two earned runs in five-plus innings and earned the win for DeSales. Giammarese was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Shelby Wilson had a 2-for-4 showing. Brugger was 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs scored and two RBIs.
DeSales got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap as Petrilla doubled to start the second and eventually scored on a ground out by Bartholomew. The Aggies answered in the third as, with two outs,
Kasey Martini singled, stole second and slid into home on an RBI single by Wear.
The Bulldogs took control of the game with four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Courtney McKenna had a two-run single in the fourth while Bartholomew added a two-run double to highlight the fifth. They put it out of reach with seven runs on five hits and two errors in the seventh. Bartholomew finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and four RBIs. Wilson was a perfect 4-for-4 and scored three times. Rachel Vogel pitched into the seventh inning for her first win of the year.
Delaware Valley scored in the sixth on an RBI single by
Keri Hardiman while Wear hit her second home run of the season to plate two in the seventh. Wear was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Alexis Boucher gave up just four earned runs in six-plus innings and took the loss.
