Former Delaware Valley College head coach and current assistant
Bill Manlove has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame and will officially be inducted during the two-day Enshrinement Festival in South Bend, Indiana from July 15 to 16.
Manlove is part of the 2011 Division Hall of Fame Class which considers players and coaches from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA for induction. He is the first person with ties to Delaware Valley College to receive the honor.
Manlove compiled a 211-111-1 career record in his 32 years as a head coach at Widener University (1969-91), Delaware Valley (1992-95) and La Salle University (1997-2001). Most of his success came at Widener where he led the team to a pair of NCAA Division III national championships in 1977 and 1981, 10 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championships, and a streak of 21-straight winning seasons from 1970-1990. He was a two-time ABC/Chevrolet Division III Coach of the Year and a nine-time MAC Coach of the Year
After retiring as a head coach in 2001, he returned to both Delaware Valley College and the football sidelines in 2002 as an assistant coach. He served as a consultant/assistant to the head coach in his first year, but took over the reigns of defensive coordinator for the 2003 season following a late staff departure. That was the turnaround year for the Aggies as they went from 2-8 in 2002 to 9-2 and an ECAC Southeast Bowl championship.
Manlove returned to his role of consultant/assistant to the head coach the next year and the success continued as Delaware Valley has won five MAC championships and made four trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs, including quarterfinal runs in 2004 and 2005, over the last seven years.
Manlove formerly served as president of the American Football Coaches Association in 1991 and was a member of the organization's board of trustees from 1982-91. In 1995, he was named the recipient of the NFF Philadelphia Chapter's Distinguished American Award, and he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
