DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College and FDU-Florham battled for nearly four hours and finished with a Freedom Conference doubleheader split. The Aggies held on for a 6-4 victory in the opener before FDU-Florham took a 3-2 decision in the nightcap.
Delaware Valley (8-12, 2-4 Freedom) took advantage of five Devil errors in the first game, including two in the opening inning that eventually led to three runs. The first two Aggies reached base on miscues with one run scoring on the second error. An RBI double by
Jess Bensinger and an RBI single by
Erin Fox made it 3-0.
Delaware Valley added two more in the third on three hits and one FDU-Florham error. Bensinger led off with a single, stole second and scored on a one-out double by
Keri Hardiman. Following an error,
Dani Walton singled home Hardiman for a 5-0 advantage.
In the fourth, FDU-Florham (8-12, 4-2) loaded the bases for the third time in the game. The Aggies got of the jams in the first and the second, but the Devils plated three runs this time on an RBI single by Brittni Wurst and a two-run single by Sarah Lima.
The Devils loaded the bases again in the fifth but Delaware Valley starter
Maggie Kichler got a ground out to end the threat. FDU-Florham did make it a one-run game in the sixth as Megan Golembiewsi smacked her third home run of the season. After a single,
Loran Mihaliak replaced Kichler on the mound and got the final out of the inning.
The Aggies added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as
Kasey Martini reached first on a two-out single and
Allison Tomasino drove her in with a double off the left-center field fence. In the seventh, Mihaliak retired the first two batters she faced, but the Devils loaded the bases with a single, an error and a walk. However, Mihaliak got the next batter to ground to Tomasino at shortstop and stepped on second to end the game.
Kichler got her first win of the season as she allowed four runs in five-plus innings. Mihaliak earned her first collegiate save. Offensively, Bensinger and
Dani Walton had two hits apiece.
FDU-Florham had 15 hits in the game but it stranded 15 runners. Elizabeth Spiller was a perfect 4-4 with a run scored. Megan McInaw went the distance and took the loss, despite allowing just three earned runs.
The Devils left 14 runners on base in the nightcap, but they able to make their three runs over the first two innings stand. They scored two unearned runs in the top of the first as Megan Boyle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Christine Antoniotti followed with an RBI single. In the second, Sarah Lima drove in a run with single to left-center.
Delaware Valley got two runs back in the bottom of the second. Hardiman reached on an error and
Sarah Lazar followed with a walk. Dalton came to the plate and she doubled down the left field line to score both.
Neither team could break through the rest of the way. For the Devils, Karla Babb allowed just three hits over the final five innings. She got stronger as the game went on and struck out the side in the seventh to wrap up her first win of the season. Offensively, Lima was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Greer McComas took the loss despite allowing just one earned run over seven innings.
Jackie Wear was 2-for-3 with a double.
