MIHALIAK'S GEM HELPS AGGIES SPLIT TWINBILL AT EASTERN

ST. DAVIDS (PA) – Freshman Loran Mihaliak hurled a four-hit shutout and the first blanking of the season for Delaware Valley College as the Aggies split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with host Eastern University. They dropped an 8-4 decision in the opener before a 9-0 victory in the second game.

The split left Delaware Valley with a 10-18 overall record and a 3-8 mark in the Freedom while the Eagles saw their marks go to 16-13 and 3-8.

The opener saw the Aggies take a 2-1 lead in the third inning as sophomore Krystle Mazza smacked her first collegiate home run and freshman Jackie Wear tripled in a run. However, Eastern came right back with three runs in the bottom of the stanza – all on a home run by pitcher Janelle Fair.

Delaware Valley made it 4-3 contest in the top of the fifth as a Wear ground out plated Mazza, who opened the inning with a single. The Eagles once again responded with a three-spot as Fair went deep again. The Aggies another run in the sixth on a RBI double by Sarah Lazar, but Eastern's Michele Monogell ended the scoring with a solo bomb for the 8-4 final.

Fair finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and six RBIs. She also picked up the win as she allowed four runs (three earned) and nine hits while fanning six. Mazza was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI for the Aggies while Wear was 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Greer McComas pitched four-plus innings and took the loss.

Delaware Valley bounced back in the nightcap thanks to Mihaliak. She improved to 3-2 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.75 on the season. The four hits she allowed were all singles and she walked three while striking out five. Only two Eastern players reached scoring position in the game.

Offensively, the Aggies struck for three runs on two hits in the second inning. Jess Bensinger drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first tally and Wear added a two-out, two-run single later in the stanza.

Delaware Valley then put the game away by scoring four times on three hits and three Eagle errors in the fourth inning. Lazar had the big blow with a two-out, two-run single to center. The final runs came in the sixth as Allison Tomasino notched an RBI double and later scored on a single by Dani Walton. Walton was the lone Aggie to have a multiple-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
