DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College's
Greer McComas and Misericordia University's Caitlin Cromley had strong pitching performances as the two teams split a Freedom Conference doubleheader. Misericordia racked up an 11-0 win the opener before the host Aggies bounced back with a 7-2 victory in the second game.
Cromley improved to 7-5 for the Cougars (11-11, 4-4 Freedom) and she hurled the four-hit shutout in the opener. Meanwhile, she received plenty of offensive help as the squad had 15 hits in the game and put two runs on the board in the second, three in the fourth and six more in the sixth and final inning (game called due to the eight run mercy rule.
Jillian Castaldi was a perfect 4-for-4 in the contest and was a triple shy of the cycle. Her three-run homer in the sixth was her second round-tripper of the season. Maria Kidron was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI while Nicole Wenner drove in a pair of runs.
Maggie Kichler took the loss for the Aggies.
It was a different story for Delaware Valley (9-13, 3-5) in the second game as it matched its hit total from the entire first game in the first inning. It scored three times in the stanza thanks to a two-run double by
Jackie Wear and an RBI single by McComas.
Misericordia cut the lead to 3-2 in the second as Jess Campbell drilled a two-run homer to straightaway center field. The Aggies had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the inning but could not take advantage of it.
However, Delaware Valley bounced back in the third as it scored four runs on four hits and one Cougar error. The miscue allowed the first tally in and catcher
Jess Bensinger followed with a three-run shot that cleared the fence down the left field line. It was the sophomore's first home run of the season and it upped the lead to 7-2.
McComas took care of the rest although she found herself in trouble in the sixth as Misericordia loaded the bases with nobody out. McComas then got a pop out to the catcher, a fly out to right and a ground out to third to end the threat. She improved to 4-4 as she allowed two runs and six hits while fanning eight. Bensinger finished 3-for-4 with the round-tripper, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Campbell was 1-for-3 with the two-run bomb for Misericordia. Kidron had two hits in four at-bats. Jess Armillay went two-plus innings and suffered the loss.
