EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Juniors
Erin Fox and
Keri Hardiman hit home runs in the second game as Delaware Valley College regrouped from a last-inning loss in the opener and split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with host Wilkes University. The Lady Colonels took the first contest, 8-7, before the Aggies were 14-7 victors in the nightcap.
Delaware Valley, which arrived back from its Spring Break in Florida less that 48 hours earlier, saw its record go to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The split left Wilkes with a 1-9 overall mark and a 1-1 showing in the Freedom.
In the opener, the Aggies trailed 6-4 after five innings of play, but rallied with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 7-6 advantage. In the sixth,
Jackie Wear and
Kasey Martini reached base on a single and fielder's choice respectively. Tomasino then drove in Wear with an RBI single and, two batters later, Fox singled home Martini for the tying run. In the seventh,
Krystle Mazza reached on a one-out error and came around to score the go-ahead run on a one-double by Martini.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, Alysha Bixler led off with a single and Jordan Borge followed with a hit of her own. Bixzler advanced to third on the base hit and Borge moved into scoring position on the throw. A wild pitch brought home the tying run and Borge to third base. After a strikeout, Jackie Follweiler knocked in Borge with a walk-off RBI single.
Each team had 13 hits in the opener. Wear led the Aggie attack as the freshman went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Tomasino stole three bases as well as she was 3-for-5 with a run scored an RBI. Follweiller was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Lady Colonels while Borge finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
In the nightcap, Delaware Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings of play. It racked up five hits and took advantage of three Wilkes errors over that stretch. One of the hits was Fox's second home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning.
The Lady Colonels bounced back in the bottom of the third as Bixler smacked a three-run homer. The teams then each scored twice in the fourth for a 7-5 contest. The Aggies' two runs were courtesy of a Wear sacrifice fly and a Tomasino RBI single.
Delaware Valley then put the game in the fifth inning by scoring five times on three hits and two Lady Colonel miscues. All five runs came with two outs in the stanza with the big blow being a three-run homer by Hardiman.
Borge and Cori Saltzer had back-to-back home runs in the sixth for Wilkes, but the Aggies responded with two unearned runs in the seventh for the 14-7 final.
Hardiman was 3-for-4 and just a triple shy of the cycle. She scored three runs and knocked in four. Martini and
Jess Bensinger had two hits apiece while Tomasino drove in two.
Greer McComas picked up the win.
Bixler, Borge and Kait Brown combined to go 8-for-13 with two home runs, five runs scored and five RBIs for the Lady Colonels.
