DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Destinee Horning and
Gina Page combined for 34 kills and 48 digs and starred in a fifth-set comeback as Delaware Valley College held off visiting Wilkes University for a 3-2, Freedom Conference victory. Set scores were 25-9, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-12 in favor of the Aggies.
With the win, Delaware Valley improved to 17-4 overall and 3-2 in conference action. The Aggies, who are comprised of all freshmen and sophomores with the exception of one junior transfer, are now one win shy of tying the school's single-season record of 18 set by the 1997 squad (18-14).
More importantly, Wednesday night's triumph has them in a tie with FDU-Florham for third place and one game ahead of Misericordia in the Freedom with two matches remaining. The Aggies lost to FDU-Florham earlier in the year, but they have the head-to-head tiebreaker with Misericordia thanks to a 3-2 road win. The top four teams qualify for the Freedom Conference playoffs, a feat Delaware Valley hasn't accomplished since 1988.
The Aggies came out flying and took the first set in just 20 minutes, only to see the Lady Colonels (2-17, 0-5) tie it up in set number two. The teams then split the next two to force a fifth and final set.
Wilkes scored five of the first six points in the fifth, but Delaware Valley rallied for five straight and a one-point lead. An error tied the set at 6-6 before the Aggies notched four straight points, including a kill and a solo block by Horning. Delaware Valley built the advantage to 12-8 before the Lady Colonels made a final run with three straight. The teams exchanged points for a 13-12 Aggie lead.
Crystal Ronan's kill gave the Aggies a match point opportunity and they sealed the win when Page had a dig off a Wilkes attack that eventually landed on the Lady Colonels' side of the court for a kill. It was one of four kills for Page in the fifth set.
Horning finished with 18 kills, 18 digs and four blocks while Page had 16 kills and a team-best 29 digs.
Janel Gluch finished with 14 kills and four solo blocks while
Alyssa Riggins added seven kills and 19 digs. Ronan notched 45 assists and 17 digs.
Casey Bohan and Paige Trusty led Wilkes with 14 kills apiece while the two also combined for 14 digs and five blocks. Kate McGurk added 34 kills and 21 digs in the loss.
