DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team mounted a late comeback in a hard-fought third set but couldn't complete the rally, falling to Marywood in three sets on Tuesday evening (25-8, 25-19, 28-26).
Senior
Samantha Wilton reached a career milestone during the match, recording her 1,000th career dig on her ninth dig of the night.
Marywood took control early in the opening set, using a 5-1 run to build a four-point advantage.
Monique Smith answered with a kill to keep the Aggies within reach, but the Pacers responded with a 17-3 run to create separation.
Layla-Deanna Rabanal halted the stretch with a kill, but Marywood closed out the set with an Aggies error and a service ace to take the opener, 25-8.
DelVal found its rhythm in the second set, trading points with the Pacers and keeping the deficit to four points or fewer before putting together a push of its own. Kills from
Camilla Garcia, Rabanal,
Charlotte Kampf,
Hayley Drinkard,
Zoe Bera and
Madison Alexander helped the Aggies take a two-point lead. However, a service error shifted the momentum back to Marywood, which closed the set on a 9-1 run to secure a 25-19 win.
The Aggies carried that fight into the third set. Alexander opened the scoring with a service ace, but Marywood responded with a 7-1 run to take control. Kampf sparked the comeback with a kill as DelVal outscored the Pacers 10-5 to pull even. The teams traded points from there, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage.
A Smith kill, followed by a Marywood error, put the Aggies at set point. The Pacers answered to force extra points, and Rabanal delivered a timely kill to tie the score at 26. Marywood responded with back-to-back kills to close out the set, 28-26, and clinch the match.
DelVal returns to James Work Gymnasium for its final home match of the season on Thursday, Oct. 29, hosting King's at 7 p.m. The Aggies will honor seniors
Monique Smith and
Samantha Wilton during a pregame ceremony.
