DELVAL WRAPS UP SEASON WITH PAIR OF 2-0 TRIUMPHS OVER WILKES

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – It was Senior Day but sophomore pitchers Maggie Kichler and Becky Furman stole the show as they each hurled complete-game shutouts as Delaware Valley College ended the season with a pair of 2-0 victories over Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University.

The Aggies finished the 2010 campaign with a 15-16 overall record and a 5-9 in the conference. The triumphs also gave seventh-year head coach Rich Matarese a total of 100 in his career, the first Delaware Valley softball coach to reach the milestone.

Seniors Lauren Fenstermacher, Nancy Kauffman and Bethany Pavlik were honored in-between games and just moments after the trio combined for four hits, a run scored and an RBI in the opener. Fensterrmacher singled to pen the bottom of third and she moved all to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Dani Walton and a wild pitch. Freshman Greer McComas then drove her home with an RBI single to center field.

In the fourth, Kasey Martini opened with a single and moved to third on a pair of ground outs. Kauffman came to the plate and notched her second hit of the game, an RBI single in the infield, for a 2-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for Kichler as she improved to 4-6 on the season. She allowed just four hits, including a pair of doubles by Wilkes' Gina Stefanelli, and did not walk a batter while striking out four in seven innings of work. Lindsey Behrenshausen took the loss for the Lady Colonels (12-22, 5-9) despite allowing just two run and seven hits over six innings.

Furman was coming off a five-inning no-hitter against Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday and she nearly matched that performance while improving her record to 5-3. She permitted just two hits – singles by Stefanelli and Abbey Agresti – and one walk while fanning five.

Delaware Valley notched both of its runs in the fifth as Furman opened with a walk and came around to score on a triple to right-center field by Pavlik. It was Pavlik's final at-bat in an Aggie uniform and she notched numbers that put her among the best in program history. The three-time all-conference honoree (this year's squad has yet to be announced) finished as the school's all-time leader in both home runs (tied with 19) and RBIs (98), second in hits (140 and just one shy of tying the mark) and fourth in batting (.385).

Later in the fifth, Pavlik scored on a wild pitch by Wilkes' Maureen Pelot. Pelot was solid on the mound as well as she permitted just three hits and three walks over six innings.
