DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College received walk-off singles from
Nancy Kaufmann and
Dani Walton as the Aggies pulled out a pair of come-from-behind victories over Freedom Conference foe Eastern University. They took the first game, 4-3, in eight innings and followed with a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.
The sweep put Delaware Valley back over the .500 mark with a 9-8 overall record. The team also moved into a fourth-place tie with Misericordia University in the Freedom standings. Eastern fell to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The opener saw the Aggies trail 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when
Allison Tomasino smacked a two-run double. She then moved to third on a
Kasey Martini single and Martini advanced to second when the throw from the outfield sailed past an infielder.
Sarah Lazar then lifted a fly ball to right field to score Tomasino with the tying run. With two outs,
Bethany Pavlik singled to right field. Martini tried to score on the play, but she was gunned down by Eastern's Carly Rawlings to send the game to extra innings.
After the Eagles were retired in the top of the eighth, Delaware Valley began the bottom of the stanza with a pair of outs. However,
Jess Bensinger doubled to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kaufmann, a senior, then came through with a single to center to score Bensinger with the winning run.
Bensinger was 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Tomasino added a 2-for-4 showing and also scored a pair of runs.
Becky Furman picked up the win in relief of
Maggie Kichler, who went seven innings and allowed just three runs.
Michelle Morongell and Molly Oberholzer had two hits apiece for Eastern while Jaclyn Gangemi had a two-run single in a three-run, fourth inning. Kristine Rosko went six-plus innings on the mound and allowed three runs (one earned). Janelle Fair suffered the loss.
The nightcap saw a similar situation for the Aggies as they trailed by one heading into the final inning. Pavlik led off the stanza with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bensinger.
Keri Hardiman then tied the contest as her single up the middle scored Pavlik, while the throw to the plate allowed Hardiman to move up to second. After a walk to
Greer McComas, Walton delivered a single to left field that easily scored Hardiman for the 3-2 victory.
Hardiman finished with two RBIs as she had a sacrifice fly in the second. Pavlik was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Furman started and allowed just one earned run and four hits in five innings. McComas pitched the final two innings for her third win of the year.
Gangemi recorded the lone RBI for Eastern as she drew a bases-loaded walk in the first. The remaining run for the team was scored on an Aggie error. Fair went the distance on the mound and allowed three runs on six hits while fanning four.
