Bethany Pavlik tied the Delaware Valley College all-time record for home runs, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies dropped 9-6 and 2-1, non-conference decisions at Alvernia University.
Delaware Valley, which returns to action on Thursday for a rescheduled doubleheader at Arcadia University, fell to 9-12 on the season. The twinbill sweep improved the Crusaders to 16-8.
Pavlik wasted no time in tying the mark as the three-time all-Freedom Conference honoree smacked a two-run homer in the top of the first innings of the opener. It was Pavlik's second round-tripper of the year and the 19th of her standout career, matching former teammate Nicole Dorney's total from 2005 to 2008. Pavlik finished the game and the day with three RBIs to move her to just five of tying Dorney'e career record of 95 in that category.
Alvernia tied the ballgame in the bottom of the first and added on in the second for a 3-2 advantage. An RBI by
Sarah Lazar in the top of the third tied the contest, and the Aggies took the lead in the fifth as both Pavlik and Lazar drove in runs.
However, the Crusaders got two in their half of the fifth, and took the lead for good with four more in the sixth. The big blow was a three-run triple by Miranda Peto that made it an 8-5 contest. Delaware Valley scored one in the seventh on an RBI single by
Krystle Mazza for the 9-6 final.
Pavlik finished 2-for-3 with the record-tying home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Lazar was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while
Becky Furman scored a pair of runs.
Maggie Kichler went six innings on the mound and took the loss.
Peto was 2-for-3 with the triple, three runs scored and three RBIs for Alvernia. Rhiannon Sorrentino added a 2-for-4 effort with three RBIs while Deanna Dungee picked up the win.
The nightcap featured a pitcher's battle between Delaware Valley's
Greer McComas and the Crusaders' Michelle Jensen as both went the distance. McComas allowed just two runs on six hits while Jensen allowed an unearned run and three hits while striking out four.
The Aggies picked up their lone run in the top of the first
Jess Bensinger reached on a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a Pavlik single and scored on a passed ball.
Alvernia tied it up in the second on an RBI triple by Danielle Kitchen. The Crusaders then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Peto led off with a single and eventually scored on a double by Michelle Hermanns. Delaware Valley put two runners on with two outs in the seventh before Dungee got an Aggie batter to pop out to second to end the game.
