WILKES-BARRE (PA) – Lindsay Hoerner notched wins in both games and also had five hits and five RBIs on the afternoon as defending Freedom Conference champion King's College swept a doubleheader from visiting Delaware Valley College, 10-6 and 12-8.
The Lady Monarchs improved to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the Freedom while the Aggies fell to 9-10 and 3-5.
Hoerner started the opener, but Delaware Valley tagged her for three runs in the top of the first.
Kasey Martini had an RBI single and then scored on a
Bethany Pavlik double. Pavlik reached home later in the inning on a wild pitch.
King's came right back with five runs in its half of the stanza, including two-run singles by Hoerner and Rachelle Zinni. The Lady Monarchs added three more in the second, including a two-run double by Samantha Hornberger, while a two-run single by Gretch Tholen in the third inning made it a 10-3 ballgame.
Delaware Valley plated its final runs with two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Sarah Lazar had an RBI double and then scored on a
Dani Walton in the fifth while a King's error accounted for the tally in the sixth.
Allison Tomasino was the lone Aggie to have a multiple-hit game as she went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Becky Furman lasted just two-plus innings and took the loss.
Hoerner went the full seven innings and allowed just three earned runs while fanning sixth. She was 1-for-4 with two runs at the plate while Hornberger, Tolen, Zinni and Christie Parfitt also had two RBIs apiece.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth, but sloppy affaire that saw the teams combined for not only 20 runs and 25 hits, but also eight walks and 10 errors. King's jumped to a 3-0 lead before the Aggies tied it up with three in their half of the inning. Pavlik ripped a two-run triple in the stanza and Lazar followed with an RBI double.
King's answered with one tally in the bottom of the third on an RBI base hit by Hornberger, but Delaware Valley took a 7-4 lead thanks to four runs off of four hits and a pair of King's errors in the fourth. With two outs,
Jess Bensinger notched an RBI single. Martini followed with a two-run triple and then scored on a throwing error on the same play.
The Monarchs came right back again and regained the lead at 8-7 with a four-run, fourth innings of their own. The Aggies committed two crucial errors in the inning while Hoerner added a run-scoring double.
Delaware Valley tied the contest in the sixth as Martini led off the inning with a triple and became just the third player in program history to record a pair of three-baggers in the same game. The Aggies eventually loaded the bases with one out and Walton was hit by a pitch to bring home Martini for the tying run.
Once again, King's responded in its half of the inning and took the lead for good with four runs off of four hits and two more Delaware Valley errors. Parfitt's two-run single brought home the tying and go-ahead runs in the stanza while Hornberger added an RBI double.
Hoerner pitched the final four innings and picked her ninth win of the year for the Lady Monarchs. She was also 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs at the plate. Hornberger finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs while Parfitt was 1-for-3 and knocked in three runs.
Martini paced Delaware Valley with a 3-for-5 showing, her record-tying two triples, three runs scored and two RBIs. Pavlik was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Bensinger, Lazar and Tomasino had two hits apiece.
Maggie Kichler pitched the final two innings in relief of
Greer McComas and suffered the loss.
