MADISON (NJ) – Delaware Valley College received strong pitching performances from
Becky Furman and
Greer McComas as the Aggies split a Freedom Conference doubleheader at FDU-Florham on Sunday. The Aggies took the opener, 5-2, before dropping a 3-2, 10-inning heartbreaker in the nightcap.
Furman went the full seven innings in the first game and the sophomore allowed just one earned run and four hits. She walked four and struck out while improving to 2-2 on the season.
Delaware Valley (7-8, 1-3 Freedom) was down 2-0 heading into the top of the third when it scored four runs off of one hit, five walks and two wild pitches. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out when three-time all-conference honoree
Bethany Pavlik drilled a two-run single up the middle to tie the contest.
Sarah Lazar drove home what proved to be the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly, and Pavlik later crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
The Aggies added a fifth run in the top of the seventh on a FDU-Florham error. Pavlik was one of six players to record a hit in the game and five different players also scored for Delaware Valley.
The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel as McComas and the Devils' Megan Golembiewski combined to go 18-plus innings and allow just 11 hits while striking out 16. McComas, a freshman, set an Aggie single-game single game record with 10 strikeouts – topping the previous mark of nine by Jennifer Bummer just two seasons ago.
FDU-Florham (6-12, 1-3) struck first in the fourth on a solo home run by Brianne Faynor. The Aggies tied it up in the top of the fifth as
Ashley Lynch-Giangregorio, pinch-running for Lazar who singled, stole second and eventually scored on a Devil miscue.
It remained tied until the 10th inning when the collegiate rules automatically put a runner on second to start a stanza. Furman went to second in the top of the inning and she eventually scored on an error. However, in the bottom of the 10th and the runner on second, Megan McInaw drove a McComas pitch over the right-center field fence for a walk-off home run. It was McInaw's second hit of the game as she was 2-for-5.
Allison Tomasino went 3-for-5 for the Aggies while Lazar was 2-for-3, including a double. Pavlik recorded the remaining hit for Delaware Valley.
