DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the nightcap as the Aggies split a Freedom Conference twinbill with visiting Misericordia University. They dropped a 3-0 decision in the opener before taking the second game, 6-5.
The Cougars (8-6, 2-2) used the long ball for its five runs in the nightcap as Katie Eiden hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Nicole Hoskins smacked a three-run shot in the third. Delaware Valley's lone run in the opening innings was an RBI single by
Keri Hardiman in the second.
The Aggies (7-5, 3-1) began their rally in the bottom of the fourth as
Bethany Pavlik doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single by
Krystal Diaz. Following a strikeout, senior first baseman
Lacy Miles drilled a pitch over the left field fence to pull Delaware Valley to within one at 5-4.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Robyn Jackson led off with a walk and moved to third on a bunt single by Furman and a throwing error by Misericordia.
Kasey Martini followed with a ground out, but it scored Jackson to tie the game. Pavlik and
Erin Fox had back-to-back walks to load the bases and a wild pitch scored Furman for what proved to be the winning run.
The Cougars threatened in the sixth as they put runners on first and second with two outs. Furman came in from second base to pitch and she struck out Katherine Lucenti to end the inning. Furman then retired the side in order in the seventh for her second save of the year.
Brianne Birtell improved to 3-1 as she went five-plus innings. Diaz, Furman and Hardiman had two hits apiece while Miles was 1-for-3 with the home run. Hoskins went 2-for-3 with the home run and three RBIs for the Cougars. Eiden started on the mound and took the loss.
The opener saw Lucenti keep the Aggies at bay through the first six innings while her team put three runs on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the seventh,
Sarah Lazar reached on an error,
Lauren Fenstermacher walked and Jackson singled to load the bases with no outs. Eiden came out of the bullpen and retired the next three batters on a strikeout, a pop out and a lineout for the save.
The win was Lucenti's fifth in seven decisions as she allowed just six hits and fanned six. Hoskins was 2-for-4, including an RBI single in the third. Courtney Novajosky and Hollie Sarnak notched RBIs in the fourth.
Jackson and Pavlik had two hits apiece for Delaware Valley.
Maggie Kichler took the loss despite allowing just three runs over seven innings.
