PAVLIK'S BOMB HELPS AGGIES SWEEP FREEDOM TWINBILL AT WILKES

EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Bethany Pavlik went a combined 5-for-8, including a grand slam home run in the nightcap, as Delaware Valley College swept a pair of Freedom Conference games at Wilkes University, 4-2 and 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.

With the wins, the Aggies improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. They will have their home opener on Tuesday, March 24 as Misericordia University comes to Doylestown for a Freedom twinbill. The Lady Colonels fell to 6-10 and 1-3 with Sunday's setbacks.

The second game was scoreless heading into the top of the seventh and final inning. After a pop out, Robyn Jackson singled and Lacy Miles followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman Krystal Diaz then walked to load the bases and bring Pavlik to the plate. The two-time all-Freedom Conference honoree smacked a Lindsay Behrenshausen delivery over the center field fence for a grand slam homer and a 4-0 lead. It was Pavlik's third hit of the game and the 14th round-tripper of her career – second on the all-time list behind 2008 graduate Nicole Dorney (19).

Wilkes managed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it against Aggie freshman Brianne Birtell. She allowed just seven hits in the contest and improved to 2-1 on the season.

In the opener, Delaware Valley struck for a run in the first as Becky Furman singled and came around to score on a Pavlik single and a two-base fielding error by the Lady Colonels. Wilkes came back in the bottom of the first as Melissa Bracone delivered a two-out, two-run single.

The Aggies took the lead for good in the third as they plated three runs in the stanza. Diaz led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Pavlik and Erin Fox loaded the bases. Kasey Martini followed with a single of her own to score Diaz and tie the game. Later in the inning with two outs, Miles came through with a two-run single and a 4-2 Delaware Valley advantage.

Wilkes put at least one runner on base in the final five innings, but Maggie Kichler and Birtell got out of every jam. Kichler pitched five and two-third innings, allowed two runs and nine hits and picked the win as she improved to 1-2 on the year. Birtell came out of the bullpen and permitted just one hit while notching her first save.

Pavlik was 2-for-4 in the game while Martini was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Miles's two-run single in the third was her lone hit of the game as she went 1-for-2. Amana Holston was 3-for-4 for Wilkes while Bracone was 1-for-4 with the two RBIs.
