DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University men's tennis team, under first-year head coach
Mary Lou Cardie, picked up their first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom win at home on Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over visiting Misericordia University.
DelVal men's tennis has been competing since the 2014-15 season and has never been able to secure a conference victory until Saturday. Last season, the Cougars defeated the Aggies, 6-1, in Dallas, Pa.
The Aggies won five out of six singles matches and took all three of the doubles matches.
Ryan Lombardo won 6-3,7-5 at first singles and
Zack Harkcom used a pair of 6-1 sets to earn the win at second singles.
Nick Gaetano and Nick Princetta battled at third and fourth singles, respectively, and each needed three sets to secure their victories. Gaetano won 6-2 before dropping the second set, 7-5, and finished with a 6-1 third set. Princetta won his first set 6-1 before going down 7-6 in the second. He bounced back with an 11-9 triumph in the third. Evan Augsburger rounded out the singles wins for DelVal with a 6-1, 6-1, win at sixth singles.
The Aggies cleaned up in doubles play led by an 8-4 win by the duo of Lombardo and Harkcom. Gaetano and Princetta followed with an 8-3 win and Augsberger teamed up with
A.J. Weisgerber for an 8-4 win.
