DelVal Cheer Wins Third Straight Reach The Beach Nationals

OCEAN CITY (Md.) -- The Delaware Valley University cheer team traveled to Ocean City, Maryland this passed weekend and brought home its third consecutive Reach the Beach National Championship in the collegiate, all-girl intermediate division.

After day one, the Aggies were in first place in the division standings with a score of 89.82 points. Shenandoah University followed closely with a mark of 89.5, and Worcester Unvierstiy placed in third with a score of 87.97 points. Going into day two, DelVal knew that had to hit a zero routine (no deductions) in order to maintain its first place status at the end of the competition as the final score is a 50/50 split of day one and day two scores.

On day two, the Aggies nailed the perfect performance they needed to reclaim their first place prize.

Head coach Devin Fergusson said of the accomplishment, "An important concept for an outsider to keep in mind is, the winning team isn't just the team that doesn't drop a stunt; each team receives points for difficulty and technique of every component (partner stunt, pyramid, running and standing tumbling, jumps, baskets, choreography etc.). This helps prevent a team that executes an easier routine from beating a team with a much more difficult one even if they drop a stunt." Fergusson added, ""With the amount of team members we had to replace, and the adjustments to the competition routine, I am quite impressed with with how well the DVU cheer athletes performed, and how they never allowed any setbacks to hold them back when competing on the blue mat!"
