Box Score PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College scored four unanswered goals in the final six minutes of the first quarter and never looked back as it defeated visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Delaware Valley University, 16-11.
The Valiants improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in MAC Freedom games while the Aggies dropped to 4-4 and 0-1.
Manhattanville led 2-0 just over two minutes in after goals from Ed Motherway and Colin Morrissey. DelVal got one back less than a minute later when
Chris Coyle set up
Matthew Laurence for his seventh goal of the year. From there, the two teams traded goals with the Aggies getting goals from P.J. Rafferty and
Danny Smith, to make it 4-3, halfway through the first stanza.
The Valiants then went on their run with four straight tally to take an 8-3 lead into the second quarter. Andrew Murray scored twice, Motherway added his second of the game in the spurt and T.J. Caccavo had one as well.
DelVal quickly responded in the second quarter with a three-goal run of its own. Reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year
Danny Smith started the scoring 15 seconds in and Rafferty followed with his second of the game with 9:33 on the clock. Smith then won the ensuing faceoff and scored just 10 seconds later to make it an 8-6 game. It was back-and-forth until the halftime whistle and the Valiants held a 10-7 lead at the break.
Manhattanville outscored Delaware Valley, 3-1, in the third quarter to hold a five-goal lead heading into the fourth. The Aggies pulled to within four of tying the Valiants three times, but could not get any closer. Coyle scored twice more in the final 15 minutes and Rafferty added his third of the game.
Rafferty added an assist to finish with four points while Coyle (two goals and one assist) and
Danny Smith (three goals) each managed three points. Laurence,
Dylan Brasch and
Jordan Smith pitched in two points apiece. Rafferty and
Danny Smith combined for 11 ground balls while
Gavin Yingling stopped seven shots.
Morrissey, Murray and Will Duval netted three goals apiece for Manhattanville. Zach Hoffman was strong in net as he stopped 20 Aggie shots.
