Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University's late comeback bid fell just short as the Aggies dropped a 6-5 road decision at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe DeSales University.
Both squads sit at 6-6 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 3-2 in league games and the Aggies fell to 2-3. DelVal is tied with two others for the fourth and final conference playoff spot with two games remaining.
The Aggies jumped out to an early two-goal lead as
Bryan Thompson got his first of the season just 34 seconds in and
Jordan Smith followed shortly after with his 13
th of the year. DeSales got one back before of the end of the quarter when Bryan Weber set up Josh Harman for his eighth of the season and it was 2-1 going into the second.
Nick Shendge made it 3-1 for DelVal when he buried a pass from
Matt Brady with 10:25 left in the second.
The Bulldogs began a 5-0 scoring run less than two minutes later as Harman found Eric Magro to pull within one, 3-2. The score remained that way into the break.
In the third quarter, DeSales managed to keep DelVal off the board while finding the back of the net three times to take a 5-3 lead. Magro and Harmon each scored their second of the day and Justin Wilson added his first during the run. Wilson then scored his second early in the final stanza to increase the Bulldogs' lead to three.
The Aggies fought hard in the final 15 minutes and the defense shutout DeSales to keep them in the game. With 4:29 remaining on the clock,
Matt Brady connected for his ninth of the season to make it 6-4.
After losing the ensuing faceoff, DelVal quickly forced a turnover and got the ball to Brady who beat the keeper again to make it a one-goal game with 3:42 left in regulation. The Aggies had one last shot in the final minute when
Chris Coyle put one on goal, but Matt Barry made the save and DeSales held on for the 6-5 win.
Brady led DelVal with two goals and one assist for a three-point game. Shendge, Smith and Thompson each scored once.
Danny Smith had five ground balls and four caused turnovers while
Nic Brown made 12 saves in goal.
Harman, Magro and Wilson each had two goals for the Bulldogs and Harman added two helpers for a team-high four points. Frank Krug led all players with 10 ground balls to go with two caused turnovers. Barry earned the win in goal and made eight saves.
The Aggies will host Misericordia University for a MAC Freedom contest on Tuesday, April 25 (7 p.m.).
