Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – FDU-Florham outscored host Delaware Valley University, 9-2, in the second half to earn a 12-8, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.
Both squads are now 2-2 in MAC Freedom games while the Devils improved to 6-7 overall and the Aggies fell to 6-5.
DelVal got out to an early 4-0 lead with four different players tallying in the opening 10 minutes.
Chris Coyle started the scoring with a shot from straight-away after a feed from
Jordan Smith, and
Matt Brady followed with an unassisted tally. Smith picked up his second assist when
Matthew Laurence scored from 20 yards out before
Dylan Brasch capped off the run with a man-up tally as he took a pass from
PJ Rafferty and finished in-tight.
FDU-Florham still had not scored going into the second where they ripped off three unanswered goals. Michael Warg got the Devils on the board and Alex Orazietti scored his first of the day shortly after. Then it was Dalton Rimmer who fed David Stewart to make it a 4-3 game with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
The Aggies got two back before the break as Rafferty scored on a solo effort and then set up Smith to make it 6-3 at halftime.
The second half belonged to Orazietti and the Devils as the freshman scored the first three goals of the third stanza to tie the game at six just five minutes in. FDU-Florham captured its first lead e on a tally from John Belanger with 6:36 left in the third. DelVal quickly tied the game less than three minutes later when Coyle lasered a shot under the crossbar after a pass from Rafferty. The assist was a milestone gor Rafferty as the sophomore became the first player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau in a career. His totals stand at 47 goals and 53 assists in just 27 games.
In the final stanza, the Devils scored two goals separated by 18 seconds and tacked on a third to pull ahead, 10-7, with 9:22 left in regulation.
Coyle got one back for the Aggies with 6:24 on the clock, but it was not enough. They surrendered two late goals while playing aggressive defense in the final two minutes and FDU-Florham escaped with the 12-8 victory.
Rafferty had a four-point day with one goal and three assists while Coyle (three goals) and Smith (one goal, two assist) each earned three points. Brady, Brasch and Laurence picked up the other tallies.
Danny Smith led the defense with six caused turnovers and five ground balls and
Bryan Thompson won 13-of-21 face-offs with seven ground balls.
Nic Brown played all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves.
Orazietti led the Devils with five goals and two assists for seven points and Belanger followed with four goals and one helper for five points. Warg notched two assists and one goal to go with three ground balls. Dan Decker paced the back line with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers while Tom Tornetto earned nine saves in the win.
The Aggies will head on the road Saturday to take on DeSales University at 1 p.m.
