Box Score WILKES-BARRE (PA) –
Nick Shendge scored four goals while
PJ Rafferty had a tally and four assists as Delaware Valley University went on the road and downed King's College, 10-6, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest.
The Aggies moved into a three-way for second place in the conference with the win as they improved to 6-4 and 2-1. The Monarchs fell to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the MAC Freedom.
DelVal picked up the lone goals of the opening quarter and they came in the final four-plus minutes of action.
Chris Coyle found the back of the netting first off a feed from
Dylan Brasch while Rafferty had an unassisted tally.
Goals by Brian Steiger and Shawn Dickey tied it for King's in the second. However, the Aggies took the lead for good with 8:08 left in the stanza as Shendge got his first off an assist from
Danny Smith.
Jordan Smith followed with 5:28 remaining as DelVal took a 4-2 advantage in the intermission.
???????Steiger scored 55 seconds into the third quarter to make it a one-goal contest, but the Aggies responded with four straight to take command. Shendge scored off a feed from Coyle with 10:51 to go in the quarter and Brasch converted a
Matt Brady pass nearly two minutes later. Shendge completed his hat trick in the third and opened the fourth-quarter scoring as well. Rafferty assisted on both of those tallies.
King's scored three of the next four –Brady the lone Aggie goal off a Rafferty feed – to make it a three-goal contest, but Coyle got his second of the game off Rafferty's fourth helped with 2:45 left for the 10-6 final.
???????Shendge got his four goals on seven shots. Rafferty upped his point total on the year to 35 (13 goals, 22 assists) with his performance, which also included five ground balls. Coyle had a three-point showing while Brady and Brasch each had a goal and an assist.
DelVal's defense was strong all game as it caused 13 of the Monarch's 24 turnovers and held them to 15-for-24 on clear attempts.
Danny Smith, the reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year, had six of the caused turnovers and he also scooped up 10 ground balls.
Troy Darpino added four caused turnovers. Freshman
Nic Brown finished with a career-high 17 saves in goal, including 10 in the second half.
???????Steiger had two goals and three points to lead King's. Matt Basile stopped 12 shots in net.
The Aggies will host FDU-Florham for a MAC Freedom game on Wednesday, April 19 (4 p.m.).
