DelVal Field Hockey Drops Home Opener To Gwynedd Mercy, 3-2

Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Allie Bauder scored two goals, including the game-winner with 8:55 remaining, as Gwynedd Mercy University notched a 3-2, road triumph over Delaware Valley University in a non-conference game.

The win lifted the Griffins to 2-1 on the young season while the Aggies fell to 0-3.

It was the home opener for DelVal, but Gwynedd Mercy needed just 90 seconds to get on the scoreboard. The Griffins had back-to-back shots up close that Aggie goalkeeper Rosie Bishop stopped, but the rebound on the second shot when to Brianna O'Connell and she connected for the early lead.

It was the lone goal of the first half and it remained 1-0 through the first 13-plus minutes of the second stanza. Then the two teams went on an offensive flurry as they combined for four goals in a 13-minute span. First it was Bauder who scored with 21:13 remaining off an assist from O'Connell.

The two-goal lead lasted just 47 seconds as DelVal came down the field and Kara Imes slid a pass to freshman Madi Colon. Colon then blasted home a shot into the far left corner of the cage for her first collegiate goal.

The Aggies tied the contest with 12:55 to go as Samantha Collyer dribbled down the left hand side about 60 yards and slid a pass into the circle. Carlie Baldus was there to re-direct it in for her second goal of the season.

However, back came Gwynedd Mercy. Bauder wound up with the ball in the center of the circle as she swept a backhanded shot into the low right corner. DelVal had one final opportunity and it came with a penalty corner with no time remaining. Timera Brooks-Watts got a shot off, but it went wide left and the Griffins had the win.

Gwynedd Mercy outshot the Aggies, 22-13, and also held an 11-3 advantage in corners. Bishop stopped nine shots in the loss for DelVal, which will head to the Frostburg State University Tournament and battle Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 10 (2:30 p.m.).
