Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Timera Brooks-Watts scored the lone goal of the game as Delaware Valley University opened Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom field hockey play with a 1-0 blanking over visiting Manhattanville College.
The Aggies improved their overall record to 4-5 and will look to get to the .500 mark when they host Alvernia University on Tuesday, September 27 (4 p.m.). The loss dropped the Valiants to 5-4 overall.
DelVal dominated the first half with advantages of 11-0 in shots and 13-2 in corners. However, the Aggies could not put any of their opportunities into the cage until their final shot off their final corner of the stanza.
As the clock ticked under a minute to go in the half,
Carlie Baldus began the corner with a pass to
Stefania Swider at the top of the circle. Swider slid the ball to her left and Brooks-Watts sent a blast past Valiant goalkeeper Kaitlin Halloran for the 1-0 lead. It was Brooks-Watts' first goal of the season.
Manhattanville notched its first shot of the game 6:40 into the second half and Aggie freshman
Rosie Bishop was there to stop it. Bishop then came up big down the stretch as the team was trying to hold onto the one-goal advantage. With just under five minutes remaining, she came out and stopped a potential Valiant breakaway by a player to the ball and clearing it. Then, with 1:34 to go and off a Manhattanville corner, Bishop made a big save on a Maisey Kettlewood re-direction of a Bregje Smith shots. DelVal moved the ball down the other end and ran the clock out.
The Aggies finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots and had a 16-5 lead in corners. Bishop was credited with two saves for her third shutout of the year. Halloran had nine stops for the Valiants.
